The importance of cellular paving systems

 Why use Cellular pavers?

With all the recent stormy weather descending on Europe, it's obvious that flooding and heavy downpours are becoming more frequent and commonplace everywhere. Architects and engineers are increasingly replacing traditional hardscapes like concrete and asphalt with plastic paving to contribute to SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage System) allowing the absorption of rain and stormwater immediately to prevent flooding, pooling, and reducing runoff to an absolute minimum.

This is just the start of it though. Did you know that by using a cellular paving system you're contributing to natural filtering of rainwater by 90% as by allowing infiltration of the soil, pollutants such as hydrogen, nitrogen, phosphorous, and various hydrocarbons are naturally filtered via the bioremediation process? With runoff from concrete and asphalt, additional pollutants can be collected and integrated within the water table.

Temperature is another area that Cellular paving systems contribute to a positive environment. In winter there is less freezing ice on the surface of a cellular paver than standard materials as any surface water will filter through the fill material meaning a safer surface to park or drive on. In addition, the summer surface temperatures will be lower, as in extreme heat the fill will be cooler than concrete or asphalt which is better for all our environment. Finally from an aesthetic perspective, the natural fill of grass or stone looks better and does create more green spaces which are maintenance-free and easy to use. Cellular pavers can be ideal for a variety of uses from driveways and car parks to emergency roads and more.

For the environmental challenges, we face going forward cellular paving is something we can all look at using to help us help ourselves, a cost-effective product that is easy to install. For more information on the different types of cellular paving systems available our team is more than happy to help and advise.
